Pilates for Horse Riders

Horse rider Pilates sessions work to balance the body for riding and
help the rider to become more body aware

Exercises help with strength, posture and flexibility

Common complaints:

  • Maintaining balance and stability in the saddle
  • Having an independent seat and legs
  • Back pain and soreness after a ride
  • Better communication with the horse
Your posture and lifestyle can lead to muscle imbalances over time. Asymmetries in the body can greatly affect your movement and alignment, resulting in poor bio-mechanics and issues such as:
  • Rounded shoulders
  • Tightness or pain in the low back and pelvis
  • Overuse of hip flexors and hamstrings

Why Pilates for horse riders?

Pilates exercises increase your body awareness and improve strength, balance and flexibility in order to achieve a better partnership with your horse. In particular, Pilates helps riders:
  • Maintain optimal posture on the horse, with increased muscular endurance and strength of the abdominals & spine
  • Independent use of the hands and legs, thereby communicating with more subtle aids to the horse.
  • Improved hip mobility and pelvic awareness
  • Ability to absorb and move with the horses movement
  • Better stability in the saddle with a more secure seat

With a strong core and increased flexibility, riders can:
  • Freely and gently move arms and legs around a stable base
  • Help clarify aids and hold jumping form
  • Avoid collapsing and bouncing in the saddle
  • Better absorb a horse’s movement
  • Improve posture to help you deepen your seat
  • Increase comfort during and after your ride
  • Maintain neutral pelvis so you can easily follow your horse’s movements
  • Develop a trusting riding relationship, where your horse responds to your commands and is confident in your ability

"I have worked with Carolyn in her studio, as well as attending her mat classes. I have really valued the help she has given me with rehabilitating my lower back. The exercises we have practised have been really beneficial in aiding the mobility of my affected joints. I have been impressed with how much relief they provide! Carolyn is knowledgeable, thorough and helps you be more aware of the connections throughout your body and how to get these to work for you. I would definitely recommend working with her, both in a mat class and one on one capacity." – Angela, Teacher and Horse Rider
